Exclusive interview for hellfest.fr : HAVOK [David Sanchez (vocals & guitar)]

11 July 2016

“In my opinion thrash metal is the epitome of metal. It’s full of aggression and testosterone. IT makes you want to bang your head and throw people around the room. To me thrash is what metal is all about” – David Sanchez – Friday 17 June 2016

So your dream tour is Havok, Revocation, Warbringer, Vektor?

For us, for all the bands involved and the vans.

Is that actually going to happen?

Definitely. It’s already been talked about by a couple of the bands.

Otherwise, how have you felt about Hellfest so far?

Fantastic. The show was killer. The layout is awesome and the lineup was among the best I’ve ever seen.

I was impressed at how easily you captured the audience…

I try to make sure that everyone is yelling. Even for shy people who don’t like to yell, a rock show is one of the only places in the world where you can actually let loose and scream at the top of your lungs. It’s a good place to be a maniac and I try to make sure that everyone is being a maniac because you will have more fun. If you are yelling and screaming you will have a better time. It’s my mission to make sure everyone has a good time.

How do you learn to do that?

Twelve years of practice! It’s just been acquired over time, figuring out what works and what doesn’t work.

This year you’ve gotten to do this and tour with Megadeth, what’s left for you?

We still need to play for Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slayer. We’ve played festivals with these bands but we want to tour or have a one off show with them. What’s left is more of the same. We want to keep releasing records and doing what we do.

Is Havok a full time thing for you?

Yes. I don’t make a lot of money but this is what I do. It’s what I want to do with my life. I’m very happy with it, even though I don’t make a lot of money.

How do you make that work?

Well I still live with my parents! (laughter) Even if I could move out I don’t think it would be wise because I’m away 8 months out of the year. I don’t see the sense in spending money on a place where I’m only there a third of the time.

Obviously you are one of the hardest touring bands in metal, do you ever worry about getting burnt out?

Not yet. I don’t know if it will happen. I think when you are traveling a lot more adrenaline is created and you are always thrown into a new environment and that produces a high for me. I don’t know if I will ever get burned out on that. I love to travel and I love making people happy. I don’t know if I will ever get burned out.

When you, Vektor and Warbringer came out it was like a resurgence in thrash, and now we are seeing a re-resurgence… does that make sense? Why is that?

In my opinion thrash metal is the epitome of metal. It’s full of aggression and testosterone. IT makes you want to bang your head and throw people around the room. To me thrash is what metal is all about. It’s riffs, cool solos it’s fast too. I love that. I think it’s going to keep coming back around because to me it’s metal in its most pure form. It’s not sing songy, it’s not about your girlfriend. It’s all fucking aggression. To me thrash is the best of metal all in one style. It’s fast, aggressive, heavy and fun all in one style.

I listen to other kinds of music, it’s not just metal, but as far as what makes me happy and what I like to perform for people this is what I like to do.

Why do you love doing that so much?

I get a kick out of having the power of a guitar in my hands. I can just do something with my hands and somehow it makes all these people scream. I like making people happy in general, but at a show where I can make thousands of people happy by doing something I love to do in the first place it’s the best thing ever. I think it’s really cool how if I can make some music for some people and they all get a smile on their face that’s awesome. It’s like I’m having sex with all of those people at once. I’m getting happy and they are getting happy and it’s a reciprocal thing. I like emotionally and metaphorically fucking the crowd and them fucking me back!

This just got gross! What percent of the crowd do you fuck?

A very small amount. Usually 0 percent.

Got any final words of wisdom for me?

Think for yourself and question all the shit that you see on the television and the radio. Thinking for yourself breeds good results. Think for yourself and be nice to people. Things will be alright.
